100 Word Challenge Week #14

“Hey…. I just returned from Africa yesterday and I have a little gift for you.”
Alice couldn’t wait to introduce Amber to Stevey. He was the funniest monkey in the world. As soon as Alice was awake, she Face Timed everyone she knew, including Amber, to show her the surprise that was waiting in the extravagant hotel lobby. Alice set the computer on the table in front of Stevey. A scream of pure delight erupted from the speaker. Stevey angrily pushed the laptop off the table.
“He hates screaming,” Alice winced.

She couldn’t blame Stevey; she appreciated her eardrums too.

Week #13

“Hey Ma,” I called while trotting into the kitchen, “Have you seen my…”

I stopped in my tracks to ogle at the giant cat that was slinking in the open front door. Mom came into the kitchen and glanced at the television. The newscaster was ranting about a broken gate at the local zoo and all of the animals that snuck out. I tapped Mom on the shoulder and pointed to the bundle of orange and black fur. Because the tiger was blocking our escape, we called the zoo and waited upstairs for them to come. Personally, I was overjoyed when they arrived.

100 Word Challenge Week #12

I should’ve known something would go disastrously wrong. My sister had never been that fervent about a turkey sandwich in her life. Not realizing that the ground was topped with puffs of snow was one thing, but letting Zoey play outside, not clueing in when the kid got super energetic, letting her trip, fall and brake an ankle was another. I hurried her to the hospital and let the nurse slip her behind a silky, white curtain. I watched the nurse change the battery in her walky-talky and murmur into it. She turned around to stare at me incredulously.

“She’s three,” I supplied weakly.

100 Word Challenge Week #11

I felt awful about using Great Grandpa's old Monk robes, but people shouldn't be able to see it was me who was still grieving. After my best friend was in that terrible car crash two years ago, I've felt truly alone. I just wanted a silent moment to remember her. Alice was great, honest and inspiring. She traveled all around the world helping the communities in need and making children smile. When she went to heaven, we put a plaque on the tree they crashed near. Glimmering Iceland was her true home, and I always will be, her one true companion.

100 Word Challenge Week #8

I fell asleep that night, dreaming of the swimming trip tomorrow. We celebrated summer at our school by going to Tofino, spending the day swimming, eating huge ice creams, and flopping around like seals on the sand. Beautiful Vancouver Island is where I live, surrounded by the glossy Pacific Ocean,so, a dream like mine could create a life long phobia. In it, I was sloshing through the water -actually whipping cream- flooded with fear. Just as I reached a sand bank, an icy flame shot me upwards. I woke up and switched off my white noise machine. The ocean didn't sound as calming anymore.

Hundred Word Challenge Week #7

I pranced into school that morning and headed for my locker, feeling like I was floating on a cloud. My team had won three polo tournaments in a row and I was positive we  could  win it all. Just as I was about to close my locker, I noticed a flash of movement in my mirror. I whirled around just in time to see a man headed towards me. He grabbed my arm and started dragging me away.
"What's going on?" I asked, but it was too late. He flung me into a dark room and, as the door slammed, I knew my cover was blown.

100 Word Challenge Week #5

My Special Item

The handle clenches in my hand whenever I ride a horse, feeling right to me. It looks like a long purple stick to other people, but to me it is a very important horseback riding tool. It gets the lazy mare trotting when she doesn't listen to the kicks I give her, and the small whack on the shoulder from it encourages her to behave. The day my Mom and I bought it, along with my other riding supplies, I don't think we realized how long it would help me for. Now, I will not leave the stable without it.
